Tier1 Performance is a contracting company dedicated to helping workers achieve their full potential. A lofty goal indeed, which is why Tier1 pairs clients with dedicated teams of designers and educators who devise unique solutions to their problems, often in the form of training courses and educational videos.
That’s where I came in. During my 2 years with Tier1, I made a few storyboards and did some user testing here and there, but the bulk of my work was in motion graphics - taking the beautiful storyboards my colleagues would draw up and bringing them to life!
For client privacy purposes, most of what I produced at Tier1 can’t be shared in its entirety, but please enjoy this selection of clips as a demonstration of my work!
“Songs of Ice & Fire” is my senior capstone project and an ongoing endeavor to capture the themes of George R.R. Martin’s book series A Song of Ice and Fire through hand-drawn animation. Primary programs used were Photoshop, Animate, After Effects, and good ole’ paper & pencil. Check out the Behance version here!
I animated this video as part of a group effort to pitch a theme for our senior capstone show. “Design &,” our proposed byline, was meant to highlight that each graduate’s contributions to the world would be determined not just by 5 years of design school, but by how they synthesize that education with their own unique skills and insights. Though our theme was not chosen as the winner from the 15+ proposals, we were proud of our work and the experience we gained.
It’s alarming how easy it is to bop around online without realizing just how much of your activity is being monitored. This animated short aims to remind viewers of this danger, point them toward a couple remedies, and entertain in the process!
This summer I had the chance to work for HBO, America’s original premium television channel. While a part of their design team, I had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, including formatting media for their digital spaces and multiple marketing campaigns.
For years, Montgomery Eye Physicians & Surgeons identified themselves by the names of their ophthalmologists, leading to confusion whenever a new physician joined the team. Taking a permanent name meant establishing a more streamlined public image, one that represented their unified goal of providing the best eye care possible.
For nearly two decades, the University of Cincinnati Libraries have taken part in the International Edible Books Festival, an event held around the world every April. In 2018, I had the privilege of designing for the UC Libraries’ celebration, which meant producing promotional materials and several items needed the day-of. I even got to update the UCL Edible Books branding to include an original character - a visibly distressed book who is not pleased with the event! Click here for rough timeline of the UCL’s participation in the International Edible Books festival!
Since my introduction to Adobe After Effects in the Summer semester of 2018, my interest in learning animation has steadily grown. I’ve still got a lot to learn, but I’m excited to continue improving! Here are a few samples of what I’ve created with After Effects so far.
Working at the University of Cincinnati Libraries was a great privilege. My supervisor gave me a wide variety of assignments including event marketing, web graphics, full-scale window exhibits, and more! Here’s a selection of some of that work.
Tasked with creating a non-linear navigation system, I decided to pay tribute to the esoteric rock band Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats. Accordingly, I designed a prototype for a web app aimed at entertaining fans and engaging new listeners. Users are able to browse the band’s discography, listening to their music and compiling their own playlists while learning about the group’s lineup and history.
Character Almanacs is a concept I was toying with of an artistic social app where artists of any skill level could organize and share characters they've drawn or otherwise produced. Creators could go into as much or as little detail as they want, outlining a character or creature's story and the creation process, or just posting an unaccompanied image of their work.
Assigned to design a “Save-the-Date” webapp, I adapted that year’s existing artwork for my home state’s annual death metal music festival, Maryland Deathfest, into an interactive prototype. Click through it yourself here!
I used photography, photo editing, and graphic design to create original artwork for two music albums: Mumford & Sons’ Sigh No More and Butthole Surfers’ Electriclarryland.
The purpose of these storyboards, on top of developing and refining strong thumbnail sketching skills, was to investigate how images can communicate story visually. These thumbnails depict a particularly shocking scene from John Carpenter's 1982 film "The Thing."
